Description

Mahoning Valley Safety Council: The Machine Safety Life Cycle The Standards-Based Process for Risk Assessment & Mitigation for Machinery Hazards in Manufacturing

Featuring: Mark Eitzman / Safety Applications Engineer and Project Manager, Integrated Mill Systems (Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Chicago) / Functional Safety Tech. Machinery TUV Rheinland, Cybersecurity Specialist TUV Rheinland

This session with Mark Eitzman will provide an overview of the proper approach to risk assessments and the subsequent steps of designing and documenting machine safety solutions. This is commonly referred to as the Machine Safety Life Cycle. The output of the process is the documented proof of due diligence in attaining OSHA regulatory compliance for manufacturing. The process, grounded in the standards, is the consensus for applying safety technology, such as gate interlocks, light curtains, safety PLCs/drives/valves, etc. It is how the safest manufacturing companies in the world are also the most productive.

Attendees will learn:

--How the team/task-based risk assessment helps ensure compliance and acceptance by those affected by the machine, including the machine operator.

--When is it LOTO vs the "minor servicing exception.

--How to determine the best risk reduction measures for the application.

--Why we don't just "throw a light curtain on it;" what else is required to ensure the solution doesn't contain flaws that could fail to a dangerous state?

--How the process generates the documentation you'll need in the event of a safety incident.
